It’s probably a condition you’ve heard of, and you might associate it with looking pale, fainting, and feeling tired. Anaemia is when the body doesn’t have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen to the body's tissues. This might be because of an issue with the number of red blood cells, their shape/structure, or an issue with the components inside them that carry the oxygen.

Erectile dysfunction is the consistent and recurrent inability to sustain an erection of sufficient rigidity and duration to engage in satisfactory sexual intercourse. It’s a health concern that greatly affects quality of life, sexual relationships, and a man’s overall confidence and wellbeing. The severity of erectile dysfunction exists on a spectrum, with multiple potential causes, but each individual case is usually categorised as either psychogenic or organic.

The impact of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) on cardiovascular risk remains a highly debated topic in the medical community. Conflicting evidence from randomised controlled trials and meta-analyses has raised concerns about the potential risks associated with TRT, particularly in individuals with a high risk of cardiovascular disease. While some highly controlled studies report no effect or even improvements in cardiovascular health, others have led to a concern over arterial plaque progression and cardiovascular events that has stopped the trials early.

Premature ejaculation is the most common sexual dysfunction in men – sometimes referred to as early or rapid ejaculation. The condition is generally diagnosed by short ejaculatory latency (< 2 minutes of sexual stimulation), poor ejaculatory control (ejaculating before personal intent), and anxiety or distress during most sexual engagements. The definition of premature ejaculation is ever-changing, however. While health associations still characterise premature ejaculation in the context of vaginal penetration, many experts want the definition to include all sexual activities, with or without a male or female partner.

Robust health systems serve as the cornerstone for achieving universal health coverage, ensuring essential diagnostic and treatment procedures are accessible to individuals of all ages, genders and ethnic backgrounds. However, universal health coverage includes not only the availability of these services but other factors such as affordability, accessibility, and the overall quality of healthcare delivery, making it a multifaceted challenge. Left unaddressed, gender inequalities in health and disease awareness, and in the availability of routine health check-ups and treatment can lead to sub-optimal health systems with an excess of preventable deaths and morbidity. Cross-national research in high to low-income countries shows that gender inequalities on both sides are embedded in our health systems universally, and rarely addressed.

Do we need a men’s health strategy in the United Kingdom?
